The basics of Christian faith tells us that people need Jesus.

But what is your plan to reach others? Is it just to learn to be a more effective evangelist?

We believe that an important part of your life in Christ is learning to connect with others, both those who are Christian and those who are not.

Remember that Jesus loved people and always showed that he cared. At times our interactions with the world may be that of trying to push an agenda, however it should start with a true desire to help.

Recently I have been reading John Maxwell’s book Everyone Communicates Few Connect. Though the book is not written to train others as evangelists I believe it has some very practical advice as we interact with others in our daily lives. These thoughts are taken from chapter 4 Connecting Always Requires Energy.

The basic principles in connecting are to show interest in others and to possess the ability to make others feel comfortable.

  1. Connecting requires initiative…go first. When God puts it on your heart to talk to someone, you can’t always wait for them to come to you. You must go first. This could be inviting them over for a cup of coffee, or a playdate with the kids, or meeting them for their lunch hour.
  2. Connecting requires clarity…prepare. Even before you take the initiative to go first, you need to prepare for what you are approaching the other person with. Maybe it is
  3. Connecting requires patience….slow down. In our world filled with technology we are used to getting everything instantly-instant messages, instant coffee, instant movie streaming. But relationships don’t happen in an instant. They may take years to grow.
  4. Connecting requires selflessness…give. When building relationships our thoughts should be focused on ‘Lord show me what this person needs so that I can serve them.’ Though our desire is for others to know Christ, people have practical everyday needs and struggles. If we are there helping them in their brokenness without judgment but simply serving them expecting no return, then they will see Christ in us.
  5. Connecting requires stamina…recharge: This means taking time to care for yourself. It is good to pour a lot of energy into connecting with others but you are also responsible for caring for your own soul.

“Connection always begins with a commitment to someone else “ (89)

As you go through your day pray that God would bring you people to connect with? Decide now- do you want to be a vessel God can use as you make yourself available to others.

We live in a world filled with noise yet people are lonely- longing for someone who truly cares. Click To Tweet

I really appreciate this post – I’m coming out of a time in my life when I needed to withdraw in order for some serious healing to take place. Now I’m learning what a process it is to really connect – and it’s not always easy. Your 5 principles are a great encouragement – thank you!
